Less Anxiety, More Calm

Former anxiety sufferer, Hypnotherapist and Life Coach Simon Pimenta shares why it is important to address anxiety. Simon offers Hypnotherapy, Life Coaching and Neuro-Linguistic Programming sessions through Bellenden Therapies.

As a person who used to experience anxiety and panic attacks to a debilitating degree, I often spot when people are trying to use the same strategies that I used, in trying to manage anxiety. Unfortunately, these strategies didn’t really work for me.

In this post you are going to learn:

  • Why it is important to address anxiety.
  • The mistakes that people make.
  • What you need to do that can help reduce anxiety.

It’s really important to address anxiety because if we don’t, it can actually just get worse. Also, it can increase the risk of getting health conditions and can make recovery from health conditions difficult. So recovery from a condition like ME/CFS, aka chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and even long covid can be hindered by stress and anxiety. There is research that demonstrates this.

Finally, it can be a complete waste of energy. How many times have you worried about something and it all worked out? Or you worried that someone was upset with you, or that you had upset them and actually everything was ok? I used to do these things more than was useful – making up stuff in my head that wasn’t real.

The Anxiety Mistakes People Make

The first mistake people make is to believe they can’t change.

That is not true.

I used to be a very anxious person and have made massive change in this area. I am more relaxed most of the time. I enjoy social situations. In the past, I found some situations very stressful. I am able to speak in public, whereas speaking in public used to absolutely terrify me.

Furthermore, I have seen other people make massive changes, by reducing their anxiety and learning how to experience more calm and confidence.

The second mistake people often make is to try and control everything.

They try and control our environment. They try and control people so that they don’t feel anxious. That can put a strain on relationships. Also, it is exhausting.

Finally people get stuck in avoidance behaviors.

They avoid situations where they might feel anxious. The problem with that is that can lead to a smaller life.

How To Beat Anxiety

So you may be asking yourself: what do I need to do instead to overcome anxiety? What anxiety treatments are effective?

In order to beat anxiety, it is important to understand:

  1. That it is possible to change. It is important to know that anxiety is not part of your personality. It’s a habit. The good news is that we can change habits.
  2. How we generate anxiety. When we understand how we generate anxiety, we can learn how to stop generating anxiety.
  3. How the mind, brain and body work. When we understand how the mind, brain and body interact, it is possible to experience more peace and calm.

In addition, there is evidence that hypnotherapy is an effective treatment for anxiety. In particular, according to research, teaching people self hypnosis techniques has shown to be an effective anxiety treatment.
